Children who are backward in the mainstream schools, and who are identified as " Slow Learners " , are provided Remedial Education, part-time during the week ends. All other children attend the school full-time.
Almost all the children in the schools come from backgrounds , where the parents cannot even afford to provide a morning meal to their children before sending them to school. As a result, we provide a fresh glass of milk and a nutrition meal daily.
Our dedicated and committed team of Volunteers and Teachers in Jaffna , are performing an excellent job in trying to improve the lives of these unfortunate people , with the support of our kind Donors.
We need not describe to you the pathetic situation of these disdavantaged children and youth. Most of them live in cadjan thatched roof houses covering an area of less than 250 square feet. Most of these families cannot afford more than one meal a day.Their usual meal is rice conghee.Due to lack of space ,almost most members in the family sleep outside the house , with the sky as their roofs. You can imagine , how it would be on a rainy night !
Due to the closure of the A9 Road ( which is the main access road from Jaffna Peninsula to the South ) , general business has collapsed, and masons, carpenters, plumbers, construction workers , general workers and labourers have lost employment. Due to the ban / restrictions in fishing in the sea , fishermen have also lost their emloyment.Farmers have also not been able to earn a living , as most of the fertile lands have come within high security zones.
Gods Own Children , currently conducts, special needs schools in three areas , and now teach more than 400 children. You can find more details on this Website. Thanks to the generousity of kind donors, we also provide them with milk , meals , clothes , shoes , books and everything necesary to ensure that their education is not disrupted.
You might want to ask us , why these children dont attend the normal mainstream schools. These children are so backward that they cannot , and will not fit into the mainstream schools. A child of 9 years who should be in grade 5 does not have the knowledge to be in that class, and can fit in only in grade 2. We accomodate all such children and address their individual needs , in addition to the needs of intellectually and physically disabled children.
GOC also operates Employment Training Centres for disadvantaged youth in three areas.
We welcome you to explore this site, and find out for yourself, the operation of these Special Needs Schools & Employment Training Centres for Disadvanatged Youth , including Sewing Training Centres for Disadvanataged Girls from poverty stricken families.
We appeal to you to assist us, and support our cause, and recommend our non profit orgainisation to all your contacts.
